Cathedral Square, September 2017
The huge extent of construction activities in Christchurch means that manpower had, and has, to be outsourced from overseas in order to sustain the rebuild efforts.
In the beginning, New Zealand turned to its traditional source countries such as Great Britain and Ireland to fill the labour shortage. Latest statistics shows a majority of recent arrivals are workers from the Philippines.
Based on the combined MBIE’s Quarterly Canterbury Job Matching Reports published between December 2014 to June 2016, the Philippines was the largest source of immigration for the rebuild with 1276 arrivals, followed by Great Britain (578) and Ireland (352).
